Lugger A lugger két vagy több
árboccal felszerelt vitorlás hajó,
amely a 15. század végén, Anglia és
Franciaország atlanti-óceáni
partvidékén alakult ki. Hasonlított a
kis viking vitorlásra, a kalmarra.
Egyetlen árbocát magas, keskeny
keresztvitorlával látták el. Az
eredeti lugger nyitott, fedélzet
nélküli, keresztvitorla helyett lugger
vitorlával felszerelt halászhajó
volt. A hajó széllel szemben is tudott
haladni, könnyebb volt kezelni a
vitorlázatát, mint a
latinvitorlásokét. Később, amikor
kereskedelmi és katonai célokra
használták, mérete megnövekedett,
egyetlen árbocához további két

lugsail is an evolved version of the
classical square sail. In both rigs, the
upper side of the sail is attached to a
spar, the yard, which is hoisted up the
mast by a rope known as the halyard. The
lower side of the sail is held in place
by a separate set of ropes, the sheets.
The main difference between the
lugsail and square is the location of
the yard in relation to the mast. A
square sail is lifted with the halyard
in the middle of the yard, lifting the
sail so it lies evenly on either side of
the mast. In the lugger, the halyard is
attached much closer to one end or the
other of the yard, and when lifted the
majority of the sail will lie fore or
aft of the mast. Since the yard is only
supported near one end, the "free" end
hangs down and the "supported" end peaks
up. This allows the mast to be shorter
than the sail, the peaked yard making up
the difference in height. The lugsail
is somewhat similar to the gaff rig as
well, which also uses a spar, the gaff,
which is hung at an angle to the mast.
The difference is that the gaff is
mounted such that it lies entirely
behind the mast, as opposed to both in
front and behind as in the lugger. While
the gaff rig is "cleaner" in that the
mast does not interfere with the sail,
it requires more complex rigging and
handling than the lugger.

Leírás: Introducing- Skiff The term skiff is
used, and has been used, to refer to
many various types of small boats.
The word is related to ship and has a
complicated etymology: ship comes from
the Middle English skif, which derives
from the Old French esquif, which in
turn derives from the Old Italian
schifo, which is itself of Germanic
origin. In American usage, the term
is used to apply to small sea-going
fishing boats. It is referred to
historically in literature in Moby-Dick
by Herman Melville[1] and The Old Man
and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway[2]. The
skiff could be powered by sails as well
as oars. One current usage of skiff is
to refer to a typically small
flat-bottomed open boat with a pointed
bow and a flat stern originally
developed as an inexpensive and easy to
build boat for use by inshore fishermen.
Originally designed to be powered by
rowing, their form has evolved so that
they are efficiently powered by outboard
motors. The design is still in common
use today for both work and pleasure
craft.

Leírás: Introducing A szkúner a 16. században
Hollandiában kialakított, legalább
két árboccal rendelkező
vitorláshajó-típus. Mint kereskedelmi
hajó a 19. században élte a
fénykorát. A szkúner is, akárcsak a
többi holland hajó, gyorsjáratú.
Könnyen romlandó élelmiszert, halat
szállított, de a
rabszolga-kereskedelemben, csempészetre
és hadihajóként is alkalmazták.
Két árbocán csonkavitorlákat
hordott, s ezek felé később még
csúcsvitorlák is kerültek. Az
orrárbocra rögzített háromcsúcsú
orrvitorlák egyetlen szkúnerról sem
hiányozhattak. A szkúner vitorlázata
nagyon egyszerű volt és könnyen
kezelhető, úgyhogy ezek a hajók
gyorsaságukkal és mozgékonyságukkal
is kitűntek, valamint kis számú
legénységükkel, ezért igen
gazdaságosak voltak. A 19. század a
szkúnerek, a klipperek és a barkok
korszaka volt, ill. a vitorlások gazdag

(pronounced /ˈskuːnər/) is a type of
sailing vessel characterized by the use
of fore-and-aft sails on two or more
masts with the forward mast being
shorter or the same height as the rear
masts. Schooners were first used by the
Dutch in the 16th or 17th century, and
further developed in North America from
the early 18th century onwards.
